An El Paso body builder and entrepreneur has opened a new fitness center, El Paso Fit Body Boot Camp, on the East Side.

The center, which opened Oct. 30 at 1506 Lee Trevino Drive, offers a $25-a-week membership with seven classes a day available.

John Crowe, who has had a lifestyle of fitness for 40 years, said he decided to open a fitness center after he was laid off from his pharmaceutical sales job in the fall of 2020.

He has been training for bodybuilding competitions since the age of 14. Over the last 35 years, Crowe has won numerous competitions, both on the local and regional level. Crowe took fifth at the North American Nationals Bodybuilding Championships in 2020.

“I want to impart my passion of fitness to other people and help them live longer, healthier lives. I saw when I was an Army nurse what can happen to people that don’t take care of themselves,” he said.

“If they don’t address their wellness today, they will address an illness tomorrow. So many of the chronic diseases we deal with today can be helped with exercise and better nutrition,” he added.

The franchise was founded in 2009 and is one of the fastest growing in the country.

He describes the experience as personal training in a group setting with groups ranging from five to 10 or more people. The workouts are offered in 30-minute increments and are a combination of high intensive interval training and active rest training to help the body burn up to twice the fat and calories than traditional workouts.

“Every exercise we do has modifications to make it even more intense, or less intense. We can account for injuries, any limitations and we will watch them, make sure their form is good,” he said.

The center can also help with meal planning, provide text support, provide body composition analysis and nutrition and goal setting consultations.

Crowe said it is good timing for a new fitness center because many people have been stationary during the pandemic.

“Sixty percent of people gained weight during the pandemic,” he said. “At some point we do have to get back to life and if you’re in the gym, your immune system is going to be healthier.”
